Preserving an Icon

Preserving an Icon: Detailing the Bare Aluminium Shelby Cobra 427 S/C Continuation

Few cars command attention quite like the Shelby Cobra 427 S/C Continuation. Born from the legendary partnership between Carroll Shelby and AC Cars in the 1960s, the original Cobra 427 S/C (Semi-Competition) was a raw, uncompromising machine built for speed, aggression and presence.

Continuation models carry that same DNA, offering enthusiasts the chance to experience a near-identical version of one of the most iconic sports cars ever made. Finished in bare aluminium, this particular example takes things a step further showcasing the craftsmanship of its hand formed bodywork in its purest form. But with that beauty comes a unique challenge - preservation.

The Goal: Period-Correct Perfection

This Cobra was entrusted to our Master Detailer, Brodie, for a meticulous preservation detail. The objective was clear - return the car to a period correct, factory level condition, while respecting the delicate nature of its raw aluminium finish and original features.

Preparing the Surface

The process began with extreme care. Unlike modern painted vehicles, bare aluminium is highly sensitive and easily marked.

We started by gently dusting the entire surface, followed by a careful waterless wipe down to remove contaminants without more water marks or fingerprints. Every movement was deliberate - this was about preservation, not correction through aggression.

Restoring the Aluminium Finish

To revive the bare metal brushed finish, we worked panel by panel using a 3M scouring pad lubricated with water. This allowed us to remove water marks and surface staining, revealing a clean, consistent finish beneath, while carefully following the original sanding direction of the aluminium.

The key here was discipline. Each panel was completed with precision, ensuring we didn’t remark or contaminate previously finished sections. The bare aluminium has quite a porous texture and can be easily marked, so constant care was required throughout the process as any misstep could leave a permanent impression.

Metal Polishing: Bringing Back the Shine

With the body restored, attention turned to the brightwork. Using AMMO Flux Metal Polish, we carefully polished bumper bars light surrounds, roll bars, mirrors and window frames

Each component was brought back to a crisp, reflective finish, complementing and contrasting the raw texture of the aluminium body.

Interior: Respecting History

Inside, the focus shifted to rejuvenation without compromising originality.

The leather seats were deep cleaned using AMMO Lather Interior Cleaner, lifting dirt while preserving the material’s integrity. Conditioning followed with AMMO Mousse Leather Conditioner, restoring suppleness and richness.

Special care was taken around the original Shelby signatures on the door cards and dashboard. Untouched and preserved as a testament to the car’s heritage.

Even the finer details weren’t overlooked. Seatbelts were removed and cleaned using AMMO Shag Fabric Cleaner, ensuring every element met the same high standard.

Wheels, Tyres, and Engine Bay

The wheels were polished to match the rest of the vehicle using AMMO Flux, while tyres were cleaned and dressed with AMMO Mud Tire Gel for a natural, period correct finish.

Under the hood, the engine bay received a full detail. Aluminium and chrome components were carefully polished, enhancing the mechanical beauty that defines the Cobra experience.

Finishing Touches

To complete the detail, we machine polished the perspex wind wings and sun visors, restoring clarity and removing fine imperfections. Small details that really make a significant visual impact.

The Result

The final result is a Shelby Cobra that looks as though it has just rolled out of the 1960s - A raw, and authentic kinetic sculpture.

This wasn’t just a detail; it was a careful act of preservation and a privilege to do so. Every step was guided by respect for the car’s history, materials, and craftsmanship.
